Valley’s hospitalists are board-certified physicians who are employed by hospitals and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat inpatients. Hospitalists treat inpatients exclusively and do not have office-based practices in the community. Hospitalists are physicians who maintain a presence in a hospital around the clock.  Their “office” is really the hospital – it’s the single location where they care for patients.

Patients are referred to them by private internists, family practitioners, and specialists. Hospitalists care for their patients from the time of an emergency or scheduled admission through to the time of discharge from the hospital. Hospitalists also rotate call schedules in the emergency room and are available as medical consultants to all of Valley’s surgeons.

Valley’s hospitalists treat patients with many types of problems, including cardiac, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and critical conditions. They also care for women with pregnancy-related complications and those who have just given birth. For patients who are scheduled for surgery, hospitalists perform pre-surgical medical clearances, care for patients during hospitalization, and do their post-surgical discharge care.

For patients, the benefits of being cared for by a hospitalist include an improved continuum of care, easy access to the hospitalist if there are questions to be answered, and medical treatment by a board-certified physician.
