Bariatric surgeon Melissa B. Bagloo, M.D., has been appointed Director of the Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss
Surgery at The Valley Hospital.
Dr. Bagloo specializes in all types of minimally invasive metabolic and weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, including “sleeve” gastrectomy, gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, and duodenal switch surgery. She also practices general surgery, specializing in gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery, and foregut procedures, including paraesophageal hernia repair, esophageal surgery for benign disorders, and reflux surgery.
Valley’s Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery has achieved accreditation from the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery’s Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Accreditation by MBSAQIP follows a rigorous review process that evaluates a bariatric surgery center’s physical resources, human resources, and standards of practice.
The team of Valley’s Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery focuses on providing a multidisciplinary approach to bariatric surgery, offering patients personalized surgical options and a full spectrum of medical and support services to assist them in improving their health. In addition to Dr. Bagloo, the patient care team includes nutritionists, an exercise physiologist, a psychologist, and a dedicated office staff to help patients begin their weight loss journey and handle health insurance and other financial issues.
“Our patients are the driving force behind our dedication to helping them achieve successful weight loss surgery and improve their quality of life,” says Dr. Bagloo. “We assist patients in determining the best type of surgery for them, based on our personalized approach to caring for the whole person.”
Many patients choose to attend an informational seminar prior to seeking treatment at the center. All new patients receive extensive one-to-one consultation from Dr. Bagloo. Referrals are made, as needed, to other physician specialists, including endocrinologists and internists.
Board-certified in general surgery and fellowship-trained in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, Dr. Bagloo has been a member of the Valley Hospital medical staff since 2010. She recently joined Valley Medical Group (VMG), which comprises more than 200 physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice nurses who practice a variety of specialties at several Valley Health System locations and community-based practices.
Dr. Bagloo received her medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 2004. She completed her residency at New York University School of Medicine in 2009 and her fellowship at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2010.
