Pediatric Specialty Care Expands with Addition of Pediatric Gastroenterologist

Board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist Katherine A. Orellana, D.O., has joined Valley Medical Group, leading to an expansion of pediatric specialty services at The Valley Hospital for children ages birth to 21.

“The addition of Dr. Orellana to our Valley family enables us to expand the depth and breadth of our full scope of services for children of all ages and their families,” says Frank P. Manginello, M.D., Chair of Children’s Services for Valley Medical Group.  “Parents can trust Valley for all aspects of their children’s health care, from primary care to emergency and urgent care and on to the continued treatment and management of chronic illnesses. Patients of Dr. Orellana who require treatment from other pediatric specialists, such as surgeons, will be easily transitioned to these physicians and streamlined to other Valley pediatric services, such as social work and nutrition counseling.”

Dr. Orellana is board-certified in three specialties: pediatrics, pediatric gastroenterology, and pediatric hepatology (liver disease). Her expertise encompasses the diagnosis, treatment, and management of all diseases and disorders of the gastrointestinal system in children. These include common complaints -- such as abdominal pain and gas, bloody stools, and gastroesophageal reflux disease – to irritable bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), celiac disease (gluten intolerance), liver disease/hepatitis B and C, failure to thrive, malabsorption, and poor growth syndromes. Dr. Orellana also performs diagnostic and treatment procedures at The Valley Hospital, including upper and lower endoscopy, liver biopsy, colonoscopy, feeding tube placement, and lactose testing.

“I look forward to offering my Valley patients state-of-the-art medical care and treatment usually found only at big academic centers, but offered here within the personal setting and compassionate atmosphere of our community hospital,” says Dr. Orellana.

A resident of Fort Lee, Dr. Orellana received her medical degree from the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency in pediatrics at Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Memorial Hospital, a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at the Children’s Hospital of Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, and a pediatric transplant hepatology fellowship at New York Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital at Columbia University in New York City.

Throughout her post-graduate training, Dr. Orellana participated in research that was published in medical journals and textbooks and also presented at annual meetings of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHN), the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, and the American College of Gastroenterology. She is a member of the NASPGHN and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
