Fibroid Treatment at Valley

At Valley, patients will discuss with their provider what the best treatment option is for them in order to meet their needs and treat their condition.  There are numerous ways to treat fibroids including:

  • Watchful waiting (expectant management)
  • Medications to treat the symptoms of fibroids and to reduce fibroid size
  • Uterine artery embolization (shrink fibroids)
  • Fibroid ablation (shrink/dissolve fibroids)
  • Myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroid) – this can often be done with minimally invasive surgical techniques
  • Hysterectomy (surgical removal of uterus with the fibroids) – this can be done without removing the ovaries.  It is recommended to keep the ovaries in for women under age 65.

Why Choose Valley’s Fibroid Center?

An experienced team: Our center is led by Howard Jones, MD and Nicole Astill, MD. Each physician has over 10 years of experience treating women with fibroids and are well known for their knowledge and expertise in this field. Both have also received additional fellowship training in minimally invasive gynecological surgery.

Improving your quality of life: Fibroids frequently cause heavy bleeding and pain, including lower back pain, pelvic pressure and sometimes pain with sex. Fibroids can interfere with bowel or bladder habits, causing constipation and affecting urinary frequency. All of these symptoms may worsen as women enter their 40s and 50s. Receiving treatment for fibroids at a specialized center such as ours can improve these symptoms, which can improve your quality of life.

Minimally invasive surgery: Specializing in the latest, most effective techniques, Valley’s gynecologic surgeons perform traditional, minimally invasive, and robotic procedures to treat a range of gynecologic conditions, including fibroids and endometriosis. Valley surgeons offer minimally invasive myomectomy (surgery to remove fibroids) using the da Vinci® Surgical System. This typically gives patients a faster recovery with less pain. Most times, our physicians are able to offer women a minimally invasive technique to treatment after being told elsewhere that they cannot treat their fibroids without an open incision.

Non-surgical options: Uterine artery embolization, also referred to as uterine fibroid embolization, offers a non-surgical option for treating fibroids. In this procedure, physicians cut off the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. This typically results in symptoms either improving or stopping.
